Similac Organic has recently reformulated their infant formula, and now their formula has no sugar or syrup solids as the primary carbohydrate! They use organic nonfat milk and organic lactose only. They include prebiotics as well. Similac Organic does have soy oil and a few synthetic ingredients. Costs $28 for a 23oz container.
As many of you already know we have been unable to stock any Loulouka baby formula from our distributor in Europe. We realize how troubling this nationwide formula shortage is for parents everywhere and we are doing everything we can to get our hands on some Loulouka as soon as possible. Unfortunately, It is still unclear when this supply will become available again. In the meantime we wanted to let you know that we have several excellent alternatives from Europe in stock now!
These are commonly added to formula to help replicate the high palmitic acid content of breastmilk. But the structure of the fat molecules in palm oil (and other vegetable oils) is different from that found in breast milk, and the fats are digested differently.
If I were looking for a formula for a baby older than 12 months, I would consider Kabrita. There is strong evidence that goat milk more closely mimics human breast milk, and Kabrita is the only formula I know of that contains the beneficial type of palm oil (see more on this above).
Similac Organic Baby Formula is the only organic formula to contain actual cane sugar, and lots of it. Their ready-to-use formula also contains carrageenan. The only upside Similac is free of palm oil.
Hi! I am using Holle formula for my baby and i love it! I knew all about it from this post so thanks to you! But my baby turned 1 this month and i wanna switch to whole milk now. Do you know any organic whole milk from europe that is available here in US Or any organic whole milk brand you are familiar with or that you trust I found one article that says Berchtesgadener Land Bio- Alpenmilch has the highest rating in Germany and the milk is from a Demeter farm, but I dont know where to buy it from. Hoping you can help me with this. Thank you!
Thanks for the updated guide!! My daughter (now 18 months) always seemed to have had issues with the powdered formulas (gas/digestive discomfort) and we had better luck with the ready to feed formulas. Unfortunately I can only find similac and enfamil in liquid forms. We ended up using similac organic ready to feed. We asked our pediatrician if there was a difference in ingredients in ready to feed vs powdered versions and she said no they should be the same but also said that a lot of parents complain of the same digestive issues with the powdered formula. Any insight on ingredient difference between powdered vs ready to feed Baby due in Oct so going over all baby info again Thanks!
Hello, has there been any new formulas since this article was originally written in 2015 that would be at the top of the article if it were written now Just curious. We just started our 5 month old on baby only organic dairy yesterday. I just want to make sure she is getting the best. Also, thank you for taking the time you research, write the article and respond to the hundreds of questions!
Non-organic formulas, in contrast, are more likely to contain scary trace chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, and heavy metals. They also tend to contain unhealthy ingredients such as corn syrups and corn syrup solids, starches and fillers, partially hydrolyzed whey protein, soy, canola and palm oils, and omegas extracted using hexane. These aren't the best ingredients to have in any food, but never mind in your baby's first energy source!
Kendamil stands out as one of the only organic, whole-milk baby formulas available on the market! Founded in 1962, Kendamil is one of the longest-running baby formula companies in Europe. Kendamil has a long and reliable history of producing very high-quality baby formulas, and they first launched this organic formula in 2018. Monde Selection awarded Kendamil with a Gold Metal as the world's best organic baby formula, and you might recognize the name from its use by the Royal Family (the Duchess of Cambridge fed Kendamil to Prince Louis)! What makes it so great It is the only whole milk formula on our list, and it doesn't contain any of the nasty ingredients we prefer to avoid - no gluten, soy, palm oil, sucrose, corn syrups, or maltodextrin. What does it have Whole milk as the first ingredient, Omega-3 (DHA, ALA), Omega-6 (LA), amino acids, prebiotics (GOS from milk), inositol, and choline. Oils are from sunflower, coconut, and rapeseed, without any palm or soy. Also, we love the fact that it contains milk fat globule membranes (MFGM) just like breast milk, which are associated with healthy brain development and cognitive outcomes in children.
In our testing, we found that the formula mixed very well with warm water without any clumping, bubbling, or excessive foaming. You can see more details about our testing in our full review of Kendamil organic baby formula. We fed the Kendamil to three infants and two toddlers, and all of them readily accepted it and drank their usual amounts. Only one of the four babies, the 4-month-old breastfed one, developed a bit of gas. Her mom didn't attribute it to Kendamil, noting that the same happens when she tries any formula. It is important to note, however, that whole milk baby formulas can be a bit more difficult to digest, especially for infants with the most sensitive tummies. For them, we would try out the HiPP option, below. The only other small drawback is price, with Kendamil topping out our list at about $1.75/ounce. We do have a 5% off \"mommyhood101\" coupon code you can use here to help stomach the price! Overall, we love the new Kendamil organic baby formulas, available in Stages 1-3, and we're happy to feature Kendamil here on our list. Here's a good bit of recent news: Kendamil is partnering with the U.S. FDA to bring Kendamil formulas to the US as part of Operation Fly Formula, and their non-organic version is now available at Target. Loulouka is one of the newest European baby formulas to hit the market and has quickly become one of the best-selling baby formulas available! And for some great reasons! First of all, many parents do not appreciate the use of soy and palm oils in their formulas, and Loulouka listened! This awesome baby formula uses only sunflower, coconut, and rapeseed oils as sources of fat. For carbohydrates and protein, it is based on skimmed milk (first ingredient) and whey powder, achieving a suitable whey-to-casein ratio similar to breast milk. If you've read elsewhere that Loulouka is a whole milk baby formula, that information is outdated: they modified their formulas a couple of years ago to use only skim milk. Why Whole milk baby formula can be harder to digest, especially for infants with highly sensitive tummies. When they switched away from whole milk, Loulouka also updated their packaging, introducing large (900g) flip-top tins that make storage and dispensing really convenient. Second, like HiPP, the Loulouka formulas contain prebiotics (GOS), choline, amino acids (L-carnitine), and Omega-3 fatty acids (ALA, DHA); going beyond many other formulas, they also include Omega-6 (linoleic acid), and inositol.
Just as important is what Loulouka stage 1 does not contain: added sugars, palm oil, soy or soy oil, GMO ingredients, synthetic nutrients or preservatives, starch, or maltodextrin. Loulouka formulas are made in Switzerland using only milk from cows fed organic grass and hay, conforming to high Swiss standards for sustainable organic farming and using locally-sourced ingredients. Most importantly, Loulouka passed our tests with flying colors! We loved the consistency, ease of mixing, and taste - and so did our test babies, who showed high acceptance and no signs of gas, indigestion, or constipation! You can read more about our testing in our comprehensive Loulouka baby formula review. Loulouka formulas come in three stages: stage 1 for use from birth to 6 months, stage 2 for 6+ months, and stage 3 for 10+ months. Of the different Loulouka varieties, stage 1 is our favorite because it avoids maltodextrin as a carbohydrate, which is added in Stages 2-3. It is essential to point out that Loulouka's nutritional profile fits within both FDA and USDA guidelines for infant feeding, as well as EU infant feeding requirements and their relatively strict organic food requirements. Note that they also make a goat version, so be sure to check out our Loulouka Goat formula reviews! Overall, we love Loulouka formulas and are thrilled to include them on our list! We think you'll also be happy to hear that the Loulouka formulas are very reasonably priced for a European formula, coming in at just over $1.00/ounce! Bobbie is making waves among discerning parents with its European-inspired formulation, organic and non-GMO ingredients, and superior nutritional composition. Based in San Francisco and founded by two moms, Bobbie released their first baby formula early last year and we were excited to get our hands on it! For all the details, check out our full Bobbie formula review. The Bobbie formula is designed for infants from 0-12 months and is suitable for both supplementing breastfeeding or exclusively formula feeding. It is made in the USA, which means not only is it certified USDA organic, it is also regulated by the FDA (which European formulas are not). If that doesn't give you peace of mind, the simple and thoughtful ingredients and nutrition facts will. The first ingredient in Bobbie formula is organic lactose and it also contains organic nonfat milk, organic safflower or sunflower oil, organic soybean oil, organic whey protein concentrate, and organic coconut oil. Just like human breastmilk, Bobbie formula uses lactose as a primary carbohydrate and maintains an ideal 60:40 whey to casein ratio. It also meets both US and EU requirements for DHA (Omega 3) content, iron content, and vitamins and minerals. In addition to DHA, it also contains ALA and LA, for additional essential fatty acids. Here's what it doesn't contain: palm oil, gluten, maltodextrin, starch, sucrose, glucose or corn syrup solids, or any other suspect ingredients. 59ce067264
